Mexico City, Mexico — Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), the operator of airports in Mexico, Colombia, and Puerto Rico, has reached an agreement to acquire URW Airports, a subsidiary of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, in a deal valued at $295 million. The transaction, pending customary closing conditions, will expand ASUR’s footprint into commercial operations at major U.S. airports.

Strategic Expansion into U.S. Market

The acquisition does not involve airport operations but focuses on commercial concessions at key terminals in Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. ASUR, which operates Cancún International Airport and is owned by businessman Francisco Chico Pardo, stated that the deal represents a strategic move into the U.S. airport retail and services sector.

If finalized, ASUR will oversee commercial operations at:

  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX): Terminals 1, 2, 3, 6, the Tom Bradley International Terminal, and the West Tom Bradley International Terminal.
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD): Terminal 5.
  • New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK): Terminal 8 and the New Terminal One.

The transaction, to be executed through subsidiaries of both companies, is expected to close in the second half of 2025.

Traffic Growth in Existing Markets

ASUR reported that passenger traffic across its airports in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Colombia reached 18.6 million in April, reflecting a 0.2% year-over-year increase for the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25).

The acquisition marks ASUR’s entry into one of the world’s largest and most competitive aviation markets, further diversifying its portfolio beyond airport management.
