Tulum, Quintana Roo — A series of arson attacks on commercial establishments triggered alarm in Tulum on Sunday after suspected armed men set fires at multiple locations in the municipality.

The incidents also spread to other areas of Quintana Roo, leading to a large-scale mobilization of emergency services and security forces. State and municipal authorities are maintaining active operations as investigations continue to clarify what happened and identify those responsible.

What Happened in Tulum’s La Veleta Neighborhood?

The first report came from the La Veleta neighborhood, where unknown individuals allegedly set fire to an Oxxo convenience store on Palenque Street.

According to preliminary reports, two men reportedly sprayed gasoline inside the establishment and set it ablaze. The initial emergency call alerted authorities that a person was inside the store at the time of the incident.

Municipal and State Police officers, along with firefighters, civil protection personnel, and Red Cross paramedics, responded to the scene. Two people sustained injuries and received medical attention. Authorities cordoned off the area while crews worked to extinguish the flames and rule out additional risks.

Were There More Attacks in Other Parts of Tulum?

Simultaneously, in the Ejido neighborhood, authorities reported an attempted arson at another store of the same chain, where flammable liquids were allegedly thrown. No major structural damage was confirmed.

Additionally, a vehicle was set on fire near the fire station, increasing the mobilization of security units across different sectors of the municipality.

During the response in La Veleta, armed investigative agents entered the building following reports of hooded and allegedly armed individuals; however, they were not located at the scene.

Did the Incidents Spread to Other Quintana Roo Municipalities?

The incidents were not limited to Tulum. In Playa del Carmen, authorities reported two vehicles set on fire in the Centro Maya area, while in Cozumel, firefighters responded to a fire at a Bodega Aurrerá-type store.

The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office opened investigation files for each case to determine whether the incidents are related or isolated events.
