Cancún, Mexico – Armed assailants opened fire and then attempted to set fire to a grocery store last night in the Aloja neighborhood, leaving a woman injured by a gunshot wound.
According to initial reports, shortly before 11 p.m., multiple calls to 911 alerted authorities to gunshots and a fire attempt at the intersection of Pacífico and Adriático streets.
Upon arrival at the scene, Municipal Police officers, along with state police and Mexican Army personnel, confirmed that two individuals had fired between eight and ten shots at the grocery store. Immediately afterward, one of them sprayed a flammable liquid on tables and chairs placed at the entrance of the business, attempting to start a fire.
Witnesses indicated that the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, allegedly an Italika brand.
Neighbors in the area acted immediately and managed to extinguish the flames before the fire could spread, preventing a greater tragedy. However, a woman was injured by a gunshot to her right arm.
Private paramedics provided pre-hospital care and transported her urgently to the General Hospital, where she was reported to be stable and out of danger.
The area was cordoned off to preserve the scene, while personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office, through the Ministerial Investigation Police and forensic experts, began the corresponding procedures for securing shell casings and evidence.
Although authorities have not confirmed the motive, the initial lines of investigation point to a possible extortion attempt.
