Animal Rights Group Fights Against Wildlife Permits

Sara Rincón Gallardo, President of the Luum Balicheo Animal Protection Society, has urged the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) to stop issuing permits that allow companies to keep animals for economic purposes. Gallardo argues that the issuance of these permits constitutes animal abuse. She is particularly concerned about permits for exotic wildlife, marine mammals, and wild fauna, and believes they should be discontinued entirely.

Gallardo recently applauded the closure of a dolphinarium due to its failure to adhere to animal handling standards. While she does not advocate for the complete abolition of dolphinariums, she does propose a shift in focus towards the care and protection of captive dolphins. Gallardo warns against releasing these dolphins into the ocean, as they may not survive the transition.
