Cancún, Quintana Roo — Water utility Aguakan will host the first Water Festival in Cancún on March 20 to promote environmental education and responsible water use, coinciding with World Water Day.

Alejandra Mayorga, Aguakan’s social responsibility coordinator, said the initiative aims to raise awareness about access to drinking water, sanitation, and conservation. She noted this year’s international campaign focuses on the link between water and gender equality under the theme “Where water flows, equality grows.”

The free festival will take place at the CECyTE I campus in Cancún starting at 10 a.m., featuring workshops, educational activities, and cultural events primarily targeting youth but open to all. Activities will cover water system operations, hydraulic infrastructure management, and filter-making, along with artistic and recreational programs.

Mayorga explained the goal is to help the public understand basic to complex aspects of water service and treatment.

While admission is free, the event includes a charitable component with a donation drive for CIAM, an organization supporting women. Mayorga highlighted that Aguakan’s recent activities have incorporated social elements to encourage community participation and aid various organizations.

She invited residents to attend and reflect on water conservation. “Caring for water is everyone’s responsibility. We want to share this learning and participation space with the entire community,” Mayorga said.
