HIDDEN DANGERS OF LOCAL PURIFIED WATER: HEALTH RISKS REVEALED

Rising inflation has led to an uptick in families choosing to consume purified water from local dispensers, despite potential health risks.

The Commission for the Protection Against Health Risks (Cofepris) reports an increase in penalties against these establishments for failing to meet water quality standards. This non-compliance has resulted in a rise in gastrointestinal illnesses. This year alone, 23 purified water outlets have been shut down, a notable increase from the 17 closures in 2023. In addition to closures, fines have been issued, and these establishments have been urged to upgrade their facilities to ensure the provision of safe purified water.

The surge in local water outlets over the past few years is also noteworthy. In 2019, the Quintana Roo Association of Dispensers and Purifiers had 128 members. By 2022, membership had grown to 210, and by 2023, it had reached 280. As of May this year, the number has exceeded 242.

The primary reason for this increase is cost. A half jug of water is priced between 5 and 7 pesos, while a full jug costs between 10 and 12 pesos. In comparison, jugs from major companies are now selling for 44 pesos, a significant increase from two years ago. Consequently, automated outlets have become the most affordable option for thousands of families in Quintana Roo. However, many of these dispensers fail to meet minimum quality standards.

Annual samples provided by the Association of Dispensers and Purifiers reveal that a significant percentage of the water contains algae, mold, and even feces. This is due to non-adherence to guidelines for the construction, installation, and maintenance of water catchment works, purification plants, and storage tanks.

In response, fines ranging from 8,000 to 86,000 pesos have been imposed, and offending establishments have been closed.
