Playa del Carmen Duo Held for Extortion Scheme

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A police officer and a taxi driver were arrested by elements of the Secretary of Citizen Security following an emergency call reporting that the pair were extorting businesses in the La Guadalupana neighborhood. Both individuals have been placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General's Office.

Detained Following Intensive Operation

The incident occurred when a call was made to the emergency number 911, reporting that two subjects were collecting "derecho de piso," or protection payments, from businesses in the area and were moving around in a local taxi.

According to the report, the two subjects were aboard a taxi marked with the number 3011. Following the report, security elements were dispatched to the area and mounted a search operation, successfully locating the alleged criminals.

Suspects Identified and Turned Over to Authorities

It was noted that the subject traveling as the taxi driver's passenger identified himself as an active member of the Municipal Police and a former member of the now-disbanded motorized unit. Both individuals were detained and placed at the disposal of the State Attorney General's Office.
