Cancún Cops Sanctioned for No Body Cameras

Cancún, Mexico — Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta has confirmed the sanction of the first three police officers in Cancún for refusing to wear body cameras while on duty. The officers were punished with arrest, as this omission is considered a serious infraction under the municipal regulations. Peralta emphasized that body cameras are a key tool for guaranteeing transparency and building trust in police conduct.

Mandatory Use with Strict Protocol

The mayor explained that all officers are obligated to wear the cameras, as established by recent reforms to the security regulations. The cameras may only be removed in specific cases, such as when using the restroom, and only after providing prior notification. The camera must be placed back on immediately afterward.

"Police officers who do not wear it will be sanctioned and can even be removed from their position if they reoffend," Peralta warned.

Cameras as Support in Investigations

The municipal leader highlighted that the cameras have already demonstrated their effectiveness, not only for providing certainty in police procedures but also as a tool for investigations. She cited as an example an alleged robbery at a supermarket on López Portillo Avenue, where the recordings were used to document the actions of the Cancún police officers and to follow up on the investigation.

"I am very attentive during my inspections to ensure all police officers are wearing the camera. It is mandatory and has been very effective in reinforcing citizen trust," she emphasized.

More Sanctions in Process

Finally, Peralta announced that the Secretary of Citizen Security, Jaime Padilla, will provide more details regarding the sanctions. Information circulating on social media suggests that more than seven officers are now under investigation for this conduct.
