Free Day of the Dead Craft Workshops in Puerto Morelos

PUERTO MORELOS, Mexico — The government of Puerto Morelos is inviting residents of the state to participate in free Workshops in Artisanal Cartonería. Participants will learn the craft of cartonería to create alebrijes and catrinas, with the best works to be entered into contests for the creation of these traditional objects.

The workshops are convened by the Instituto Municipal de la Cultura y las Artes de Puerto Morelos, in coordination with the Universidad Tecnológica de Cancún. The training is open to any member of the communities of Leona Vicario and Puerto Morelos, and is specifically aimed at people of all ages, collectives, schools, families, and resident artisans and artists.

Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a contest for catrinas and traditional alebrijes. This training is part of the Festival Mar de Almas, Janal Pixán 2025, and is intended to demonstrate the expressive capacity of citizens in this part of the country.

Registration and Workshop Details

To register, individuals must go to one of the following locations during business hours:

• Oficinas del Instituto Municipal de Cultura y las Artes.
• Palapa de Cultura, next to the Parque Principal in the Delegación of Leona Vicario.
• The schedule for registration is Monday to Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.
• A note specifies that minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to complete their registration.

The workshops will be held at two separate locations and times:

Sede for the Puerto Morelos Cartonería Workshop:

• Location: Centro Cultural y Museo de Puerto Morelos
• Days: October 6, 8, and 10, 2025
• Schedule: 10:00 am to 11:30 am

Sede for the Leona Vicario Cartonería Workshop:

• Location: Biblioteca pública Pablo Pancardo Vargas, Leona Vicario
• Day: Wednesday, October 22, 2025
• Schedule: 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

Required Documentation

General requirements for the Puerto Morelos Cartonería Workshop are:

• Copy of an INE (Voter ID card).
• Copy of a birth certificate.
• Proof of address.
• Color sketch of the work to be created.

Requirements for minors are:

• Copy of the CURP (Unique Population Registry Code).
• Copy of the birth certificate.
• Copy of the INE of the parent or guardian.
• Proof of address.
• Letter of responsibility and authorization signed by the parent or guardian.
• Color sketch of the work to be created.
