Cancún, Mexico — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa led the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the University of the Caribbean (Unicaribe), an event with the theme "Present in Our History," which recognized the staff who have made the university a pillar of higher education.
"It is a great pleasure to be here today for the 25th anniversary of this great University of the Caribbean in Cancún, recognized for its academic quality, for its social impact through community engagement, and for training professionals with an ethical sense, humanist values, and a great social commitment," expressed the governor.
She stated her satisfaction at being able to work and celebrate her 57th birthday for the people of Quintana Roo, but above all, she extended recognition to the honored staff. "Without the passion of those founders, professors, and students, this university would not be what it is today," added the head of the Executive branch.
Before students, professors, administrative staff, and guests, the governor of Quintana Roo reiterated that in this different, humanist government with a feminist heart, the money allocated to this university has not been an expense, but an investment.
Mara Lezama highlighted that Unicaribe has produced more than eight thousand graduates who are part of the cultural, gastronomic, tourist, and technological sectors of the state. She cited that professors are an important part of the students' lives, keeping them away from self-destructive actions.
To the students, the governor asked them to celebrate this anniversary with great pride, but also urged them to embrace a future filled with happiness. She told them they have the right to be happy, away from self-destructive behaviors.
At this event, Rector Xóchitl Carmona Bareño thanked Governor Mara Lezama for her presence and for her continued support of Unicaribe, one of the most important educational institutions in Quintana Roo, with an international presence in 37 countries that allows for student mobility with more than 30 universities.
The rector highlighted the recognition given to those who have been part of the university's history, which has demonstrated that education is a powerful tool for closing inequality gaps.
Governor Mara Lezama and Rector Xóchitl Carmona presented awards to six founding professors and auxiliary staff of the University; to six individuals with 20 years of service; to 11 with 15 years of seniority; to 10 with 10 years; and to four with five years. A posthumous recognition was also given to Dr. Estela Cerezo Acevedo for 25 years of service.
