Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A man identified as Pedro "N" has been formally charged and remanded to prison in connection with an alleged extortion scheme, commonly referred to as "cobro de piso" or "protection racket," targeting a local business. The State Attorney General's Office (FGE) successfully secured the charges after presenting evidence to a judge.
Formal Charges and Prosecution Evidence
Pedro "N" was formally charged for the alleged crime of extortion, specifically the "cobro de piso" modality, following the evaluation of evidence presented by the State Attorney General's Office. The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes presented evidence that allowed the judge to determine the accused's probable involvement in acts constituting the crime of aggravated extortion in Playa del Carmen.
The "Cobro de Piso" Incident at a Commercial Establishment
The events occurred in September, when Pedro "N" went to a business located on Avenida 20 Norte at the corner of Calle 2 Norte in the Centro neighborhood. There, he demanded 100,020 pesos as part of the so-called "derecho de piso."
The investigation revealed that since January 2025, the accused had initially required 20,000 pesos, later increasing the demand to 25,000 pesos, and culminating with the final, larger sum. Furthermore, he threatened to assault employees and customers if the payments were not made.
Formal Charging and Pre-Trial Detention
Following the complaint, the Attorney General's Office integrated and judicialized the corresponding investigation file, successfully persuading the court to order the formal charging of Pedro "N." The judge also imposed the precautionary measure of preventive prison for a period of two years while the legal process against him continues.
This case highlights the work of the Attorney General's Office to combat extortion crimes in the region and protect businesses and citizens from this type of threat.
