Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Municipal Sports Institute (IMD) has announced its next sporting event, the Inframundo Race "Where Souls Run Free," scheduled for November 2. The race is expected to bring together more than one thousand competitors, both local and international, in an event that combines sport and tradition, coinciding with celebrations for the Day of the Dead.
During a press conference held at the Chevrolet automotive dealership, the event's main sponsor, the director of the IMD, Alberto López Castro, detailed that distances of 5 and 10 kilometers will be offered in various categories: youth, open, master, veterans, and inclusive, for both men and women.
The event's star presence will be Juan Luis Barrios Nieves, a recognized athlete and two-time Olympic finalist in the 5,000 meters, who will also present his book "Olympic Dream," where he recounts his career as one of the best Mexican runners of the 21st century.
López Castro highlighted the effort of Municipal President Estefanía Mercado to position Playa del Carmen as a hub for significant sporting events, which favors the integration of tourism and local economic activity. He also thanked the collaboration of the Government of Quintana Roo, through the Sports Commission, which plays a crucial role in organizing events of this magnitude.
Saúl Barbosa, president of the City Commission for Education, Culture, and Sports, highlighted the support of private companies like Chevrolet in promoting sports, while Jesús Rodríguez, director of the municipal DIF system, announced the provision of 10 scholarships aimed at people with disabilities to facilitate their participation in this international-caliber event.
Registration is now open, with an accessible registration fee, and the distribution of race kits and bibs will take place on November 1 at the Mario Villanueva Sports Unit. Each participant will receive a kit that includes various commemorative items and access to the recovery area.
Upon crossing the finish line, all runners will receive medals, and there will be prizes in kind for the top three finishers in each category for both competitive distances.
The Inframundo Race is not just a sporting event; it is a celebration of life and the legacy of those who have left us, uniting the community in an atmosphere of healthy competition and camaraderie.
