Mexico — Despite global economic difficulties and the ongoing recession in the United States, medical tourism in Mexico is projected to experience a notable 22 percent growth by the end of the year.

This trend is largely driven by many Americans seeking more accessible medical treatment alternatives, increasingly choosing Mexican destinations such as Cancún and Tijuana, where costs can be up to 50 percent lower than in their home country.

Andrés Jurado Viera, Director of My Medical Vacation, highlighted that the Canadian market is the primary generator of visits in this sector, which has demonstrated a surprising capacity for resilience in the face of global financial instability. Unlike other sectors that have suffered a negative impact, medical tourism has not only remained stable but has also seen a significant increase in demand.

American patients, traditionally drawn to healthcare options within their own country, are now broadening their horizons and selecting Mexico as a destination for a variety of medical procedures. This phenomenon not only benefits Cancún but also bolsters other locations such as Tijuana, which has gained ground in the field of medical tourism.

To enhance this trend, Jurado Viera stated that promotional campaigns are being reinforced in collaboration with travel agencies and tour operators, with the goal of positioning the Mexican Caribbean as a favorable option in terms of connectivity and infrastructure.

Furthermore, a shift in the profile of requested treatments is being observed. Patients are no longer seeking only aesthetic or dental care; there is now a growing interest in more diverse medical specialties, which further diversifies the medical offerings in Mexico.
