Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico — Following the restart of work on the Puerta al Mar road, which will connect the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto with Vigía Chico, the non-profit organization Amigos de Sian Ka'an has called for the project to be executed with strict adherence to the Environmental Operation Program and the decree establishing the Biosphere Reserve.

Gonzalo Merediz, the association's general director, emphasized that the purpose of reserves is to promote sustainable community development and that any intervention must comply with that principle.

It is worth recalling that the project, managed by a company contracted by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), has been the subject of allegations concerning a multi-million-peso debt related to the work. The planned route crosses part of the Sian Ka'an reserve, which has raised concerns among specialists and environmental organizations.

Merediz stated that the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) must remain vigilant over the project. He added that Amigos de Sian Ka'an will monitor the progress of the work and noted that the association has maintained collaboration with authorities and local communities for years.

"It is necessary to act intelligently to guarantee the protection of this natural area," he stated.
