PUERTO MORELOS, Quintana Roo — The government of Puerto Morelos has installed new bicycle parking facilities at the six main access points to its beaches. The initiative aims to provide people who use this type of vehicle with a more ecological and simpler way to get around.
"This initiative promotes the use of ecological transportation methods and improves mobility in our community," the municipal government wrote on its social media channels. The local authorities are implementing actions to improve mobility for residents and visitors.
Design of the New Parking Racks
The parking points implemented by the local government consist of low-height racks that only allow for one of the bicycle's tires to be secured. These racks have a few centimeters of separation between them, providing sufficient space to secure one unit next to another, though this could cause problems for bicycles with wider handlebars.
The spaces are specially marked to avoid confusion and to prevent other vehicles, such as motorcycles or scooters, from parking in these spots.
Security Recommendations for Cyclists
While no lock is entirely infallible or offers a 100 percent guarantee against theft, having good protection can be the difference between keeping a bicycle and having to buy a new one. To keep a bicycle safe, it is important to follow these recommendations:
- Avoid cable or chain locks, as they are easy to destroy or separate their links with bolt cutters.
- Use U-shaped locks.
- Avoid leaving a bicycle in open places whenever possible.
- When securing it, try to lock at least the rear tire and the frame to the structure where it will be left.
- If possible, secure both tires to the structure where the bicycle will be left.
