Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The annual fundraising campaign of Rotary International for the global eradication of polio has commenced. The disease is currently only present in Afghanistan and Pakistan, while it has been completely eradicated in Mexico.

Sports Events to Accompany the Fundraiser

Gerardo Torres, the Rotary governor for district 4195, which covers the seven states of southern Mexico, stated that alongside the fundraising drive, sporting events such as races will be organized in all the municipalities that comprise this district.

"We invite you to help us collaborate in this fundraiser, which is being carried out by all the clubs in the state of Quintana Roo. In addition to participating in races, on October 26 there will be races in different cities across the state, in Cancún, in Playa, where you can come, contribute to the eradication of polio with your subscription, and also get a beautiful medal and a commemorative t-shirt, so stay tuned," said Torres.

50 Years of Rotary in Quintana Roo

He added that they are also celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rotary International in Quintana Roo. The organization currently has more than 1.5 million members worldwide; in district 4195, there are more than 1,300 members across 90 clubs, 18 of which are in Quintana Roo.

"Rotary began in the state of Quintana Roo 50 years ago; the Rotary clubs are just celebrating 50 years of presence, collaborating on different very important projects, ranging from the formation of libraries, schools, and clinics, to direct support in the healthcare system, giving scholarships to young university students," he stated.
