Cancún — Authorities and producers in Quintana Roo are working on a project to grant local honey a recognition with geographical indication, a process similar to the one implemented with chicle, informed Paul Carrillo, Secretary of Economic Development for the state (SEDE).

This recognition will not only function as a seal of quality but also as a legal protection mechanism that ensures the honey being marketed comes from controlled and certified processes. This prevents the sale of products of dubious origin and strengthens the productive chain from beekeeping to commercialization.

The procedure, Carrillo explained, involves extensive paperwork that requires the participation of universities, specialists, beekeepers, and authorities from different levels, who contribute impartiality and rigor to the studies. However, the process has accelerated and is expected to be faster than the chicle certification, which took around two years to complete.

Strengthening Local Production

With this initiative, Quintana Roo seeks to strengthen local honey production, guarantee its authenticity, and position it as a product recognized nationally and internationally. He also specified that they are also seeking to grant such certification to other products like octopus and bull shark, though for now the priority is honey.
