Mexico City — The National Electoral Institute (INE) has announced that the voter identification card will become digital in 2027, having approved a roadmap for its implementation. The institute indicated that the project includes seven initiatives, among them an Online Pre-registration System and an official identification that will function as a complement to the physical plastic card.
According to the Institute, with online pre-registration, citizens will be able to submit documentation remotely, which will reduce wait times at Citizen Service Modules. The digital credential will join other identifications that already function virtually in Mexico, such as the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP), the e-signature, and the driver's license.
Following the announcement, opposition groups warned of risks to the protection of personal data and rejected any action that implies the handover of citizen information to the government.
