Mexico City — Claudia Sheinbaum has solidified her position as Mexico's most approved president nearly one year after the start of her government, according to the economic studies department of Banamex. The bank reported that Mexicans perceive the head of the executive branch as defending them against threats and statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, which has influenced her high citizen approval rating.
Banamex highlighted that Sheinbaum maintains a popularity level above 70 percent, a record figure when compared to the last five Mexican presidents. "At equivalent moments, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Vicente Fox, and Felipe Calderón registered an average close to 60 percent, while Enrique Peña Nieto and Ernesto Zedillo were below 50 percent," the financial institution stated in its economic report.
Historic Popularity and Attributes Valued by Citizens
The Banamex approval index is obtained through surveys by recognized consulting firms such as Buendía & Márquez, Mitofsky, and Enkoll, which guarantees the representativeness of the data. According to these studies, President Sheinbaum is evaluated more positively than her government, highlighting attributes such as preparedness, honesty, and the ability to understand the population's concerns.
"All of these attributes register levels similar to her popularity," Banamex stated, though it specified that when citizens are consulted about the general conditions of the country, support decreases. Among the most critically evaluated aspects by the population is the handling of insecurity, which remains a central challenge for the administration.
Defense Against External Threats
A factor that has strengthened Sheinbaum's approval is her stance against threats and interference from Donald Trump. Banamex recalled that in early August, Trump signed an order to combat drug cartels even within Mexican territory, which generated concern among the population.
The president responded with a firm position: she rejected any scheme of foreign intervention, but at the same time maintains collaborative efforts with the United States in different areas, including security. According to Banamex, this stance has given citizens confidence, who feel protected and supported by Sheinbaum against potential external interference.
Comparison with Previous Administrations
The Banamex analysis highlights that Sheinbaum's popularity far exceeds the records of the last five presidents. While the current president achieves more than 70 percent approval, her predecessors were situated between 50 and 60 percent at equivalent moments in their governments. This approval record reflects the citizens' perception that Sheinbaum combines leadership with closeness to the people, which distinguishes her from previous administrations and reinforces her image as a figure capable of facing both internal and external challenges.
Pending Challenges and Public Perception
Despite the high approval levels, Banamex underlined that citizens evaluate the management of public security negatively, indicating that this remains a priority issue on the government's agenda. The population recognizes Sheinbaum's efforts but expects more concrete results in reducing crime and strengthening security in the country.
The bank concluded that, despite concerns, Mexicans support the way Sheinbaum handles the bilateral relationship with the United States, combining firmness against threats with cooperation in strategic areas like security and development.
