Tulum, Quintana Roo — The 23rd Sea Turtle Festival will be held from October 24 to 26 across three locations in the Riviera Maya: Tulum, Akumal, and Xcacel. This free event aims to promote environmental education and community participation in the conservation of these emblematic species of the Mexican Caribbean.
This edition of the festival will be dedicated to the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), a species that nests an average of four times per season, intermittently every two or three years. Its nesting cycle runs from May to September, with the highest number of nests occurring in June and July.
Specialists highlight that the loggerhead returns to the same site where it was born to lay its eggs, underscoring the importance of protecting the nesting beaches in the region.
The festival's program includes talks, workshops, activities for children, hatchling releases, and cultural events, all aimed at raising awareness among the local population and visitors about the importance of protecting sea turtles and the surrounding biodiversity.
The organizers have extended an invitation to the community and to national and international tourists to join this celebration that combines science, culture, and conservation.
The detailed schedule of activities can be consulted on the official page of the Tulum-Akumal-Xcacel Sea Turtle Festival.
