Cancún, Mexico — A powerful storm struck northern Quintana Roo this afternoon, causing severe flooding in multiple roadways and structural damage, though no injuries have been reported.
Heavy Rains and Strong Winds Disrupt Region
According to Civil Protection authorities, the intense rainfall was triggered by a convective cell moving westward, directly affecting Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, and Playa del Carmen.
The storm began around 4 p.m., bringing heavy rain, electrical activity, and sustained winds of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour. Urban areas were quickly impacted, with several streets flooding within minutes.
Power Outages and Infrastructure Damage
In Cancún, power outages were reported at the Plaza de la Tecnología, likely due to the intense electrical activity. Residents in various neighborhoods also experienced intermittent electricity disruptions.
Playa del Carmen faced similar challenges, with standing water and flooding complicating traffic in both urban and tourist zones.
Partial Roof Collapse at Plaza Las Américas
The storm’s intensity caused a section of the roof at Plaza Las Américas to collapse. Emergency services responded swiftly, evacuating visitors and vendors as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Emergency Response Underway
Civil Protection and Public Services personnel in the affected municipalities have launched extensive operations to clear flooded roads. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have confirmed no casualties thus far.
