Cozumel Mototaxi Drivers Protest License Denials by Imoveqroo

Cozumel, Mexico — A group of mototaxi drivers, formerly affiliated with the COR80 union, staged a protest to denounce what they describe as deliberate obstacles imposed by the Quintana Roo Institute of Mobility (Imoveqroo) in obtaining driver’s licenses. The drivers allege they are being denied permits because they are no longer members of a recognized union in the sector.

Protest Outside Public Safety Offices

The demonstrators gathered outside the offices of Public Safety, where they claimed they had attempted to apply for licenses a month and a half prior but were rejected. One protester stated that Bruno Villanueva, Imoveqroo’s delegate in Cozumel, had “washed his hands” of the matter, asserting that he could not approve licenses for mototaxi drivers who were no longer part of unions previously registered with the agency.

“Supposedly, we have to be affiliated with the COR80 union, but due to certain reasons, we separated from that group. We formed another group and simply want to work without any issues. All we’re asking for is the license,” one driver explained.

Vehicles Impounded Due to Lack of Licenses

Another protester reported that Imoveqroo inspectors had seized several mototaxis because the drivers lacked the required licenses.

“We’ve tried to comply with all their requirements, but they won’t let us. Just yesterday, they confiscated one of our vehicles for not having the license they refuse to issue,” the driver emphasized.

Allegations of Discrimination

The protesters accused Imoveqroo of discriminatory practices, affecting 65 drivers and more than 100 families dependent on the mototaxi service. They called on the state government to intervene and resolve the issue promptly.
