Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juárez Municipal Government, led by Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, has safeguarded 427,901 sea turtle eggs during the 2025 nesting season through its Ecology Department. A total of 3,528 nests have been protected across 43 enclosures along Cancún’s 12-kilometer coastline.

Sustained Conservation Efforts

Since the first sea turtle sighting on local beaches in late April, municipal authorities have conducted regular patrols, monitoring, and educational workshops to ensure the successful annual reproduction of these marine species. Mayor Peralta emphasized the significance of this year’s nesting season, noting that 2025 has been classified as a high-cycle period for turtle arrivals.

To date, the General Directorate of Ecology, in collaboration with the hotel sector and numerous volunteers, has released 2,945 healthy hatchlings into the ocean.

Public Cooperation Urged

Fernando Haro Salinas, head of the Ecology Department, called on residents and tourists to respect the turtles’ reproductive process. He advised against touching the animals or using flash photography, as bright lights can disorient them. In case of sightings, the public is encouraged to notify trained personnel from Ecology, the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), or nearby hotels, or to call emergency services at 911.

The municipal government continues to prioritize conservation efforts to maintain Cancún’s status as a critical habitat for endangered sea turtle species.
