Playa del Carmen Demands Faster Infrastructure Repairs

A diverse group of professionals gathered for a meeting, with a mix of men and women standing and sitting around tables in a well-lit room.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — As part of its ongoing efforts to improve and maintain urban infrastructure, the municipal government of Playa del Carmen, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, has reiterated its call for public and private service providers to fulfill their responsibilities in repairing and maintaining urban fixtures under their jurisdiction.

Fourth Interinstitutional Monitoring Meeting Held

During the Fourth Interinstitutional Monitoring Meeting, held in the "Leona Vicario" hall of the Municipal Palace, municipal authorities and representatives from concessionaire companies reviewed progress in addressing citizen complaints related to damaged or missing utility covers, deteriorated poles, and faulty overhead wiring. These issues pose safety risks and negatively impact the city’s urban image.

The session was chaired by Fourth Councilor Uri Carmona Islas, head of the Urban Development Committee, alongside Hernán González de los Santos, Director of Territorial Planning. Also present was Julieta Martín Azueta, Secretary of Public Services, who presented a progress report from each company.

Compliance Rates Vary Among Providers

The report highlighted that Aguakan, the concessionaire for potable water and sewage services, has the highest compliance rate, addressing 61.3% of reported issues. Telecommunications companies have shown gradual progress in correcting wiring and utility covers.

However, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) lags significantly, with a backlog of 95.1% in addressing 426 reports related to utility covers, small walls, and poles. Abimael Barragán Núñez, CFE Superintendent for the Riviera Maya, stated that the bidding process for hiring repair contractors will conclude on July 16, with work expected to begin five days later.

Neighborhoods with Highest Incident Reports

The areas with the most reported issues include:

  • Villas del Sol (94 incidents)
  • Downtown or Old Town (43 incidents)
  • Cataluña (42 incidents)

Additional concerns were raised regarding unused public telephones and deteriorating overhead cables belonging to Telmex and other telecom providers.

Acknowledgment and Continued Efforts

Councilor Uri Carmona acknowledged the commitment of companies that have responded to the municipal government’s calls, aligning with Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s directive to enhance urban infrastructure and public safety. However, he emphasized that more work remains, particularly from companies that have yet to demonstrate cooperation.

Carmona also thanked municipal cabinet members and the City Council for their coordinated efforts through the Monitoring Committee, which continues working toward a safer, more orderly city for residents and visitors alike.
