Mexico City — Senator Eugenio Segura Vázquez requested a one-day leave from his position due to health issues but resumed his duties the following day, according to an official clarification.
The Senate of the Republic issued Communication 1447, stating that Francisco Alejandro Carrillo Flores was sworn in last Friday as a temporary replacement for Segura Vázquez. The initial notice did not specify the duration of the senator’s leave, sparking speculation on social media.
Subsequently, Segura Vázquez’s communications team clarified that the leave lasted only 24 hours, citing health concerns. They released the official request the senator submitted to Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Senate’s Board of Directors, seeking permission to be absent on June 28, 2025.
The document cited Articles 11, 12, and 13, Section 1, Subsection V of the Senate’s regulations as the legal basis for the request. It read: “I hereby request leave to separate from my duties as Senator of the Republic on June 28, 2025.”
Notably, during Segura Vázquez’s absence, the Senate approved the controversial Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
