Yucatán, Mexico — A fatal accident on the Mérida-Cancún highway on the morning of Tuesday, June 17, claimed the lives of two preschool teachers. The crash occurred on the stretch connecting Hoctún to San José Oriente in Yucatán, near the intersection leading to the latter community.
Collision Details
According to preliminary reports, the victims were riding a motorcycle when they attempted to merge onto the highway and were struck by a Kia vehicle that had the right of way. The impact left both motorcyclists dead at the scene.
The deceased were identified as José Aurelio Cobá May, 29, and Cintia May, 24, both educators specializing in indigenous preschool education in Mayan-speaking communities. They were en route to their workplace in the municipality of Sudzal when the collision occurred.
Emergency Response
Authorities, including municipal police from Hoctún, the National Guard, state police, and emergency services, arrived promptly but could only confirm the fatalities. Personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) later conducted the removal of the bodies and initiated an investigation into the crash.
The driver of the Kia sustained no physical injuries but was treated for nervous shock following the traumatic incident.
Community Mourning
The local community expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young educators, who were widely respected for their dedication to teaching. No further details regarding the ongoing investigation have been released.
