Yucatán, Mexico — Luz María Barrera Agatón, a 36-year-old fitness influencer and former queen of the 2024 Carnaval de Motul, was found dead in a hotel pool in Yucatán, Mexico, according to local reports. The Asociación de Fisicoconstructivismo y Fitness del Estado de Yucatán (Affey) confirmed her death in a social media post on June 1.
Circumstances of the Death
Barrera’s body was discovered lifeless in the pool of a hotel along the Motul–Telchac Pueblo highway. The report stated that around midnight, some of her companions left her alone briefly in the pool. Upon their return, they noticed her absence and found her at the bottom of the pool.
Efforts to resuscitate her were made, and emergency medical assistance was requested. However, paramedics confirmed she showed no vital signs. The cause of death was preliminarily determined to be drowning, though the circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear.

The case has drawn significant attention, with international outlets such as the Daily Mail reporting that investigators have not ruled out the possibility of foul play. Authorities have yet to release further details.

Barrera was a well-known entrepreneur, fitness influencer, and competitive bodybuilder. She won state-level titles in the Bikini category in 2016 and 2017 and secured first place in the Bikini Clasificada division at the 2017 Mr. México competition.
