Cancún, Quintana Roo — Approximately 60% of hotels in Cancún, Isla Mujeres, and Puerto Morelos will offer exclusive promotions from May 30 to June 1 as part of the national campaign La Gran Escapada, El Buen Fin del Turismo (The Great Escape, Tourism’s Good Weekend). The initiative aims to boost hotel occupancy during the low season and strengthen the local economy.
Campaign Details and Participation
Rodrigo de la Peña, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, confirmed that participating establishments have submitted their rates and packages for inclusion in the campaign. The effort is led by the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur) in collaboration with Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism (Sectur).
"We hope this initiative has a positive impact on the destination. Any effort coming from the three levels of government is welcome," de la Peña stated. He added that packages are being assembled for hotels in the region, including those in Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, and Cancún.
Current occupancy rates stand at 70% in Cancún, 75% in Costa Mujeres, and between 63% and 65% in Puerto Morelos. The promotions aim to increase these figures without significantly lowering room rates.
Strategic Discounts and Packages
"We do not want to cheapen rates in any way; we are offering modest discounts. Each hotel and segment is different, of course, but we don’t want to affect pricing—we’ve achieved very good rates over the last two years," de la Peña explained.
Packages will include perks such as special dinners and spa access. While not all association members are participating, organizers anticipate a four-to-five-point increase in occupancy as a positive outcome.
Broader Industry Involvement
According to Concanaco Servytur, this first edition of the campaign includes businesses across Mexico’s tourism value chain, such as hotels, airlines, cruise lines, and the Tren Maya.
The campaign seeks to replicate the success of retail-focused promotions like El Buen Fin but tailored specifically for the tourism sector.
