Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has temporarily shut down a real estate development in Puerto Morelos after determining the project lacked the required environmental impact authorization from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
Unauthorized Construction in Ecologically Sensitive Zone
The halted project involved a 10-story building with a swimming pool, situated within a coastal ecosystem of high ecological sensitivity. Authorities identified the illegal construction during a routine inspection, where developers failed to present documentation proving compliance with environmental regulations.
Profepa imposed a full temporary closure and warned that any unauthorized resumption of work would result in legal action. Mariana Boy Tamborrell, Profepa’s attorney, emphasized that such developments must adhere to environmental laws to mitigate irreversible damage to coastal and marine ecosystems.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental protections nationwide.
Authorities continue monitoring the site to ensure compliance with the suspension.
