Hotel owners and private individuals can now legally invest in self-generated electricity projects. These projects could use wind or solar power, and any surplus energy can be sold to their neighbors. This new development comes with a simplified administrative process for selling excess power.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has allocated a budget of over 151 billion pesos through Plan Mexico. This funding is aimed at modernizing and strengthening the electricity distribution and transmission networks in the Yucatan Peninsula, with a particular focus on Quintana Roo.
This investment is crucial due to the high number of tourists visiting the 12 destinations in Quintana Roo. A reliable and high-quality power supply is necessary to meet the increasing demand from the tourism and business sectors. The project is designed to improve the electrical infrastructure, ensuring efficient and reliable service for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Additionally, a tidal energy project is being developed between the mainland of Quintana Roo and the island of Cozumel. This project involves installing underwater turbines to generate electricity by harnessing the power of sea currents.
The Expo Eléctrica y Solar del Caribe 2025 event will bring together leaders and experts from the electricity sector. Representatives from Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Central America, and the Caribbean will share knowledge, business insights, and technological innovations.
