Tulum, Quintana Roo — Erika Patricia Gómez Sánchez, a 14-year-old adolescent from Yajalón, Chiapas, died in Tulum after giving birth to her baby, who is the sole survivor and is currently under custody at the General Hospital of this municipality.
According to available information, both the young mother and her partner were just 14 years old and did not have the accompaniment of adult family members at the time of delivery. The situation has generated concern among medical authorities, as the newborn needs to be legally handed over to a responsible guardian.
The hospital reported that the presence of the adolescent’s parents or other direct adult relatives, such as uncles or grandparents, is essential to be able to deliver the minor in accordance with the law. If no family members are located within a short period, the baby will be channeled to the DIF System, which would imply separation from the family of origin.
Given this scenario, the Tulum General Hospital issued an urgent call to citizens to help disseminate the case, especially in the state of Chiapas, where the young woman was from. Authorities indicated that transportation expenses will be covered to facilitate family members traveling to Quintana Roo.
So far, the legal situation or whereabouts of the baby’s young father has not been specified. Authorities reiterated the importance of anyone who recognizes the name Erika Patricia Gómez Sánchez or has information about her family contacting the hospital immediately to ensure the newborn’s well-being.
