Wildlife Encounters Increase in Puerto Morelos as Animals Enter Homes and Streets

Firefighters rescue a crocodile from a residential area in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — Firefighters in Puerto Morelos have conducted multiple wildlife rescues in recent weeks, removing juvenile crocodiles, snakes, and lizards from homes and residential streets as residents report a surge in encounters they attribute to habitat destruction.

The Puerto Morelos Fire Department responded to citizen reports across the municipality, mobilizing crews to secure reptiles found in domestic spaces and common transit areas. Among the rescued animals were juvenile crocodiles, small and medium-sized snakes, and lizards discovered inside properties, yards, and home entrances.

Operations were carried out with safety measures to protect both residents and the animals, following established protocols for containment, temporary custody, and subsequent release in sites deemed suitable for their survival.

The fire department stated these actions aim to prevent incidents and maintain balance between the population and wildlife. However, residents in various sectors note that the frequency of such reports has increased in recent years, linking it to construction projects in natural areas.

Residents say areas that previously served as biological corridors have been cleared for construction, forcing animals to move toward urban spaces in search of shelter and food. Some testimonies warn that sightings are no longer limited to bodies of water or vacant lots but now occur inside houses and busy streets, increasing perceived risks, particularly for children and pets.

The Fire Department reiterated calls for people not to attempt to handle the animals and to immediately report any presence to emergency numbers so trained personnel can intervene. The agency emphasized the goal is to prevent accidents and ensure both public safety and species conservation.
