Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A Volkswagen Sedan, popularly known as a “Beetle,” was almost completely destroyed after catching fire while driving through the Paseos de los Olivos II neighborhood in Playa del Carmen on Tuesday. The incident caused only material damage and left one woman with a nervous breakdown.
The fire broke out on Avenida de la Estrella at the intersection with Privada Paseo del Real as the vehicle attempted to enter the residential area. Witnesses said the flames spread rapidly, forcing the occupants to exit the car and call for emergency assistance. No injuries were reported.
Playa del Carmen firefighters responded to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze, but the car was left severely damaged with its body, windows, and internal systems charred. During the operation, the area was partially closed to traffic while officers from the Public Security Department provided perimeter support and traffic officials conducted necessary procedures.
After the fire was initially controlled, the vehicle began smoking again with small flames reappearing, requiring additional efforts to prevent reignition.
Red Cross paramedics treated a woman at the scene who suffered a nervous breakdown following the incident but did not require hospital transport. Due to the extensive damage, the Beetle was declared a total loss.
Recent Fires in Playa del Carmen
This vehicle fire is not an isolated incident in Playa del Carmen. Emergency services have responded to several similar incidents across the municipality in early 2026.
In February, a private vehicle caught fire on Federal Highway 307 between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, reportedly due to a mechanical failure. In March, a pickup truck was completely burned in the Ejidal neighborhood, requiring firefighter mobilization.
Recent weeks have also seen building fires in the area. One occurred in an apartment in the Villas del Sol neighborhood where an electrical short circuit reportedly caused a fire that consumed part of the home. In the downtown area, a commercial property sustained damage from a fire that preliminary reports suggest may have been caused by an electrical overload.
These incidents have prompted authorities to remind residents to conduct regular inspections of electrical and mechanical installations, noting that many such fires can be prevented with proper maintenance.
