U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson highlighted the progress achieved in bilateral security coordination following the Second Meeting of the Security Implementation Group (GIS) between the two countries.
In a message disseminated on social media, the diplomat emphasized that the joint work has generated concrete results and reiterated Washington’s willingness to maintain close cooperation with the Mexican government.
Johnson stated that security coordination has been strengthened based on a shared approach and a common agenda that seeks to address regional challenges jointly. In that context, he noted that the collaboration impacts not only security but also the prosperity and stability of both nations.
Political Leadership and Willingness to Cooperate
The ambassador emphasized that the progress in dialogue and in the implementation of actions is developing under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
According to Johnson, the GIS meeting confirms the political will of both governments to sustain a cooperative relationship based on shared objectives.
This message adds to a series of official pronouncements that seek to show continuity in bilateral security mechanisms, regardless of political changes, and that place coordination as a central axis of the Mexico–United States relationship.
What is the Security Implementation Group
The Second Meeting of the Security Implementation Group is part of the institutional dialogue channels between the two countries.
This mechanism aims to follow up on agreements regarding border security, combating organized crime, and strengthening institutional capacities.
Through the GIS, authorities from both governments exchange information, evaluate results, and define lines of action to address common problems, with an emphasis on operational cooperation and respect for the legal frameworks of each country.
Security and Bilateral Strategic Relationship
For the United States, coordination with Mexico is key to addressing transnational phenomena that impact both sides of the border. In that sense, Johnson reiterated that security cooperation is an essential component of the bilateral strategic relationship and will continue to be a priority on the common agenda.
The ambassador’s message reflects the interest of both administrations in keeping dialogue channels open and in consolidating a collaboration that allows them to face shared challenges, in a regional context that demands coordinated and sustained responses.
