Cancún, Quintana Roo — State Police, in coordination with the State Attorney General's Office, have detained a man identified as Elías, an Uber driver, for his alleged involvement in crimes of sexual abuse and rape against two foreign women. The incidents, which involved victims identified as Edith and Lisset, occurred at different times in Cancún.
Details of the First Incident
The first incident was registered on September 15, when Edith requested a transportation service to go to the General Hospital with her six-month-old son. The driver deviated from the route onto a dirt path off Avenida José López Portillo. When the passenger questioned the change, the driver stopped the vehicle, allegedly to check a tire. He then used that moment to inappropriately touch the victim.
Faced with the woman's resistance and the infant's crying, the assailant snatched her phone and abandoned her in the brush before fleeing the scene. The victim managed to contact her spouse to receive help and file a formal complaint.
Details of the Second Incident
In a second case, a woman named Lisset boarded a white Nissan Versa vehicle in front of a bar on Boulevard Kukulcán, believing it to be a taxi. The driver took her toward the federal highway to Mérida and turned into a wooded area, where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. He subsequently abandoned her at a gas station in Supermanzana 106. Employees at the location requested intervention from emergency services by calling 911.
Legal Proceedings
The detainee, who works as an Uber driver, was placed at the disposal of a control judge. The judge imposed the precautionary measure of mandatory pre-trial detention while investigations continue.
