Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Two alleged mototaxi drivers were arrested Friday night in the Villas del Sol neighborhood after authorities found them in possession of 12 packages of drugs and more than 200 doses.
According to the Municipal Police, the suspects—operating mototaxis numbered 116 and 170—were apprehended at the intersection of Avenida Sur and Laak. During the arrest, officers confiscated a total of 246 doses of various narcotics, along with 12 packages containing marijuana and crystal meth.
The detainees were later identified as Heriberto "N," 22, and Manuel "N," 29, both originally from the state of Chiapas. Authorities seized the mototaxis and the illicit substances, which were handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Crimes Against Health, specifically the division handling small-scale drug trafficking.
The arrests come amid ongoing concerns over drug-related crime in the region. Earlier reports indicate a rise in violent incidents involving mototaxi operators, including a recent execution of a mototaxi driver in another Playa del Carmen neighborhood.
The suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
