Tulum, Mexico — The Tiburones del Caribe taxi union of Tulum has presented a proposal to the Institute of Mobility of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) to modify its fare structure, with the objective of adjusting service costs to benefit local users.
The taxi union's proposal includes a reduction in fares applied to residents of Tulum. This measure seeks to respond to multiple citizen complaints regarding alleged excessive charges and abuses that, for years, have affected the image of the public service and the tourist destination itself, according to internal sources within the guild.
Union representatives acknowledged that the high costs have generated discontent among the population and visitors, and that a comprehensive review of the fare schedule could help improve the perception of the guild, in addition to incentivizing greater use of regulated transportation.
The taxi union's proposal was formally delivered to Imoveqroo, the authority responsible for supervising, analyzing, and approving fare adjustments for public transportation services. Once reviewed, the institute must issue its final resolution, based on technical studies that include operational costs, route distances, fuel consumption, and current economic conditions. Meanwhile, the current fares will remain in effect until the state agency authorizes or modifies the request.
The leaders of the union reiterated their willingness to engage in dialogue with the authorities and affirmed that the primary intention is to reestablish trust with the citizens of Tulum.
The Tiburones del Caribe taxi union, one of the oldest and largest in the municipality, brings together hundreds of operators who provide daily service in the urban, hotel, and tourist zones of Tulum. Its proposal represents the first attempt in several years to adjust fares downward, in a context of public scrutiny and social demand for more orderly, accessible, and transparent transportation.
