Lonitas Carbono Neutral Media is a unique venture that combines circular economy principles with fashion. The project repurposes waste materials from advertising campaigns, transforming them into useful products. The company, which has been based in Tulum for the past two years, takes advertising tarps from companies such as Coca Cola, MercadoLibre, and Garnier. These tarps are then sent to workshops in various cities where they are crafted into items such as backpacks, lunch boxes, and bags, providing employment for local families in the process.
The company recently announced a new initiative to reuse tarps from the Tulum 2025 Carnival. These tarps will be transformed into backpacks and gifted to municipal employees. This innovative approach gives a second life to materials that would otherwise be discarded, demonstrating the power of sustainable entrepreneurship. The project has even earned a Carbon Unit Removal certificate from the Verified Carbon Standard, a testament to its positive environmental impact.
Each year, outdoor advertising campaigns generate tons of waste. Often, these materials end up as makeshift tents or roofs, leading to negative brand exposure. While storing these materials has been the traditional solution, it doesn't address the fact that these materials take thousands of years to decompose, creating an ongoing waste issue. Lonitas Carbono Neutral Media has tackled this problem head-on, taking responsibility for this waste and giving it a new purpose.
The project aims to provide a sustainable solution to the problem of outdoor advertising waste, introduce eco-friendly products to the market, and reduce the environmental impact of the brands involved. It also encourages these companies to take steps towards achieving carbon neutrality.
