Tulum Airport Carrier Rates Remain a Financial Hurdle

Carrier rates at Tulum International Airport continue to be high, despite having been reviewed and lowered since the airport's opening in December 2023. These rates are still considered steep in comparison to those at Cancun, according to Sergio González Rubiera, the president of the Mexican Association of Tourist Agencies (Amatur).

González Rubiera highlights that while the new rates are more competitive than they were previously, they still surpass those at other airports. This is partially due to the airport's distance from other key locations in the state, which adds to the overall costs. He maintains that, despite these adjustments, transportation in Tulum continues to pose a financial hurdle for some operators.

"The new rates are significantly better and more competitive," González Rubiera explains. "However, the problem lies in the fact that the airport board does not consider the public price. We, the operators, are the ones who pay to the airport. If the cost is excessive, we bear the loss. Even with the reductions, the rates are still relatively high."
