Playa del Carmen — A tourist van traveling without passengers caught fire on the Tintal highway, just past the third police security checkpoint. According to preliminary reports, the incident resulted in material losses exceeding 300,000 pesos.

A Short Circuit, the Probable Cause

The event occurred on the federal stretch of the Tintal-Playa del Carmen highway, approximately two kilometers from the highway toll booth. The fire appears to have originated from a short circuit in the electrical system of the Ford Transit van used for tourist transport.

Following the short circuit, the van was engulfed in flames within seconds. Fortunately, the van was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident, and the vehicle's operator managed to exit in time without suffering any burns.

The Van Was a Total Loss

Vehicular traffic in the area was interrupted. Firefighters arrived with a fire engine and managed to extinguish the voracious flames, containing their spread. However, the vehicle was reduced to unsalvageable scrap metal.

The National Guard's Highway Security division subsequently took charge of removing the unit and reopening the traffic lane.
