Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A tourist from Mexicali, Baja California, died while vacationing in Playa Xcalacoco, north of Playa del Carmen, after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to shrimp. The incident occurred near the Ocean Riviera Paradise Hotel, where the approximately 45-year-old man reportedly consumed food containing shrimp, to which his family stated he was allergic.

Details of the Incident

After eating the shrimp, the man entered the sea to swim but soon began feeling unwell, experiencing shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. When his companions realized he could not exit the water on his own, they called emergency services (911). Private paramedics arrived at the scene and stabilized the victim.

Despite their efforts, the man died while being transported to the hospital. Authorities notified his family and launched an investigation into the incident.

Authorities Investigate

Officers from the Tourist Police and the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation and determine liability. Preliminary reports suggest the cause of death was anaphylactic shock triggered by the consumption of shrimp, exacerbated by physical activity in the water. However, an autopsy is pending to confirm the exact cause.

The case remains under investigation as authorities await further medical and forensic findings.
