Tourist Boat Capsizes and Sinks Off Cozumel Coast After Sharp Maneuver

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A tourist boat capsized and sank off the southern coast of Cozumel on Tuesday after making a sharp turn, though all six passengers were rescued unharmed.

The vessel, identified as the “Cataleya,” overturned and partially submerged near the Mr. Sanchos Beach Club while carrying six tourists. Witnesses said the boat lost stability during a sudden maneuver, causing it to list and eventually sink.

Nearby boats quickly responded to assist the passengers, who were taken ashore for precautionary medical checks. No injuries were reported.

Unofficial accounts suggest the captain and crew may have consumed alcohol before the incident, though authorities have not confirmed this. The maritime authority has not issued an official statement detailing the cause or potential administrative sanctions.

Local boat operators expressed concern that such incidents damage Cozumel’s tourism reputation. “When something like this happens, it hurts the entire industry,” said Juan N, a boat captain. “Most of us follow safety protocols and training.”

Tourism workers have repeatedly raised concerns about irregular practices in some nautical services, including alcohol consumption by both passengers and crew during excursions.

This is the latest in a series of maritime incidents on the island, prompting calls for increased inspections, alcohol testing, and supervision of recreational tourism vessels. Cozumel’s economy relies heavily on water-based activities, making maritime safety a critical concern.

As investigations into the “Cataleya” sinking continue, service providers and residents agree on the need for stricter oversight to ensure tourist boats comply with navigation and safety regulations.
