Police officers responding to an incident on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Police detained three people on Tuesday afternoon after responding to a report of a possible kidnapping on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue in the Supermanzana 63 neighborhood.

Officers arrived at the scene and took the individuals into custody. The mother of a man involved in the incident asked police to release them, but authorities continued with the procedure as the report was already active and followed protocol.

According to initial reports, the woman had requested assistance from a rehabilitation center to readmit her son. However, staff at the facility allegedly failed to notify authorities in advance or obtain the required authorization for the intervention.

The three detained individuals will be turned over to the State Prosecutor’s Office for the alleged crime of attempted deprivation of liberty.

The man who was to be readmitted to the center acknowledged that those detained were colleagues from the rehabilitation facility, but stated that his mother had requested their help to ensure he did not abandon treatment.

Prosecutors will determine the legal status of those involved once the facts are clarified.
