Mexico City — Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning animated film “Spirited Away” will return to Mexican cinemas for special 25th anniversary screenings, theater chain Cinemex announced.
The 2003 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature will begin special anniversary showings on February 19, 2026, at various Cinemex locations across Mexico. The film, which tells the story of a young girl navigating a mysterious spirit world to rescue her parents, has maintained a lasting cultural impact since its original release.
“Spirited Away” established itself as a landmark in Japanese animation, with its narrative crossing cultural boundaries and connecting with global audiences. Critics and viewers alike consider it both a cult classic and a foundational work in contemporary anime.
While Netflix Mexico currently holds exclusive streaming rights for the film in the country, the theatrical re-release aims to bring both longtime fans and new audiences back to the big screen experience. The anniversary screenings will allow viewers to revisit iconic scenes, including the spirits crossing the bridge to the bathhouse.
The film follows ten-year-old Chihiro, who becomes trapped in a supernatural realm after her parents are transformed into pigs. To survive and rescue them, she must work in a bathhouse for spirits, confronting fears and discovering inner strength in a journey marking her transition from childhood to maturity.
With its distinctive visual aesthetic, picturesque landscapes, vibrant color palette, memorable characters, and story rich with moral lessons, “Spirited Away” remains regarded as one of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s finest works. The anniversary screenings promise to be among the most nostalgic and well-attended cinematic events of the winter season.
