Mexico City, Mexico — In a move to modernize and streamline tax procedures, Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) has launched a new tool for taxpayers: the Fiscal Data Card (Cédula de Datos Fiscales, or CDF). This document aims to reduce unnecessary exposure of personal data when requesting or issuing electronic invoices and could signal the gradual replacement of the traditional Tax Status Certificate (Constancia de Situación Fiscal, or CSF).
Why This Change Matters
For years, the Tax Status Certificate has been a standard requirement for SAT procedures, verifying fiscal status and enabling the issuance of digital tax receipts (CFDI). However, concerns over privacy have arisen due to its inclusion of sensitive information such as tax regime, address, and taxpayer obligations.
In response, the SAT introduced the Fiscal Data Card, a simplified document focused solely on essential invoicing details, including:
- Name or business name
- Tax ID (RFC)
- Tax regime
- Fiscal address
- Postal code
- Authorized CFDI usage
- QR code for validation (in some cases)
Will the Tax Status Certificate Be Phased Out?
While the SAT has not officially announced the elimination of the CSF, the CDF is now a viable alternative for many procedures, particularly electronic invoicing. Its primary goal is to simplify administrative processes and protect taxpayer privacy.
For now, both documents remain available for generation through the SAT’s official portal, allowing taxpayers to choose based on the policies of the businesses or institutions they interact with.
How to Obtain the Fiscal Data Card
The steps to generate the CDF are straightforward:
- Access the SAT portal: www.sat.gob.mx.
- Under "Trámites," select "Constancia de Situación Fiscal."
- Choose "Obtén tu Cédula de Datos Fiscales."
- Enter your RFC and follow the instructions.
- Check your email and download the file before the link expires.
Which Document to Use for Invoicing in 2025?
An increasing number of businesses are accepting the Fiscal Data Card in place of the CSF, as it contains sufficient data for valid CFDI issuance. However, experts recommend keeping both documents updated, especially for transactions with entities that may still require the CSF.
According to FacturoPorTi, a provider specializing in electronic invoicing and administrative solutions in Mexico, the adoption of the Fiscal Data Card marks a significant step toward simplifying and securing fiscal processes without entirely eliminating the relevance of the Tax Status Certificate.
