Playa del Carmen Growth Crisis: Services Struggle

Playa del Carmen has been experiencing rapid, unplanned growth, leading to high population densities in the central area and transportation issues. This has been attributed to the outdated Urban Development Program (PDU), which hasn't been modified to adapt to the city's changing needs.

Marta Guadalupe Suárez Dueñas, president of the College of Architects of the Riviera Maya, has emphasized the need to update the PDU. The city's rapid expansion has led to problems in providing basic services, underlining the urgent need to revise the current urban plan.

To tackle these issues, it has been suggested that experts should collaborate on analysis exercises. These would aim to identify the most pressing urban needs. Particular attention should be paid to the planned route of the Maya Train and the impact of existing housing developments in the area.

Other concerns that have been raised include street vending, low water pressure, and power outages in the central area. These issues further illustrate the need for a comprehensive update to the city's urban development plan.
