Quintana Roo to Be Fully Equipped for Biometric ID Processing by April

Cristina Torres Gomez, Quintana Roo state government secretary, speaking to reporters

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo will complete acquiring all necessary equipment for processing biometric national identification cards by April, state officials announced on Tuesday.

Cristina Torres Gomez, the state government secretary, confirmed the timeline after a Flag Day ceremony in Cancún’s Hotel Zone. She said authorities are purchasing the equipment through public tenders as required by law.

“We’re progressing well with the acquisitions,” Torres Gomez told reporters. “The purchase processes are through tenders, we’re buying equipment with the specifications required by RENAPO (National Population Registry), and once purchased, we install the software, validate it, and that’s it.”

All municipal seats in the state already have biometric equipment to process the Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP), but the new devices will enhance existing capabilities, she noted.

After completing the acquisitions, one new equipment set will support an additional mobile unit for the “Your Identity Is Your Right” program, which travels throughout the state providing identification services.

The biometric CURP includes personal data, an 18-character alphanumeric code, fingerprints, a full-face photograph, and an electronic signature. The new identification, which will also feature iris scanning, will be issued in both digital and physical formats.
