Quintana Roo: Mexico’s Top State for Human Trafficking

Quintana Roo, Mexico — In the first half of 2025, Quintana Roo has solidified its position as the Mexican state with the highest number of victims of human trafficking, with a total of 132 documented cases, primarily focused on the sexual exploitation of women. This figure places the region as the most affected by this crime, followed by the State of Mexico, which reported lower numbers.

The prevalence of trafficking in Quintana Roo reflects the urgency of strengthening protection and prevention measures in a high-traffic tourist zone, while also highlighting the impact that tolerances and deficiencies in the justice system can have on the safety of women.

Additional Challenges in Security and Health

Beyond trafficking, the region faces other challenges, including an outbreak of the Coxsackie virus in several educational institutions, mainly at preschool and primary levels, with 165 confirmed cases in this period. The spread of this viral disease requires specialized attention to curb it and guarantee children's health amid growing concern over sanitary conditions.

In terms of security, three men from Nayarit were recovered in Chetumal after being deprived of their liberty. Furthermore, recent events in Cancún have seen violence manifest its impact, with reported confrontations and executions that mobilized police forces.

Cultural and Economic Context

Concurrently, social organization continues to promote cultural activities and traditional festivals, such as the Janal Pixán Festival in Puerto Juárez, which combines religious, cultural, and tourist processes, strengthening local identity on significant dates.
