Cancún, Quintana Roo — Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa called on young people to take an active role in building peace and strengthening civic values during a ceremony marking the 205th anniversary of Flag Day in Cancún.
“Our national flag makes Mexico’s heart beat stronger than ever,” Lezama said, describing the flag as a symbol of independence, sovereignty, and hope that unites the nation beyond differences.
The event took place at the monumental flagpole on Kukulcán Boulevard in Cancún’s hotel zone. Lezama emphasized that Quintana Roo is a diverse state united under one flag. “Here, cultures and accents coexist, all embraced by the green, white, and red that give us identity,” she said.
Lezama recognized the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico’s first female president and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. In a live remote link from Campo Marte, Sheinbaum administered the flag oath to 80 schools in Mexico City, 56 Armed Forces color guards, and 920 secondary and high school color guards from 31 states, including Quintana Roo.
During the Cancún ceremony, Lezama presented flags to Quintana Roo schools and distributed 25 official flag kits to educational institutions. Grecia Marina Trujeque Chay, a third-grade student at Technical Secondary School Number 35, led the flag oath.
Addressing youth, Lezama noted that Mexico is undergoing a historic transformation and said public institutions, along with the armed forces and security agencies, are working to address root causes to build a peaceful, prosperous, and more just nation.
She stressed that civic education forms the foundation of respectful coexistence and that peace is built in classrooms, through dialogue, and community commitment. Lezama urged young people to prepare themselves, trust their talents, and avoid behaviors that harm their health, dignity, or future.
She offered special encouragement to young women, telling them, “Your voice matters, your leadership transforms, your intelligence opens paths. Don’t let anyone limit your dreams. This is a time for brave, prepared, and supportive women.”
“Build peace every day. Peace isn’t just talk; it’s a daily decision,” Lezama concluded, pledging that her administration will continue creating opportunities for youth and reinforcing civic values in the state.
Brigadier General Fidel Mondragón Rivero, commander of the 34th Military Zone, also spoke at the event, noting that respecting national symbols is a fundamental principle in Mexican schools and highlighting the flag’s presence in key national moments.
The ceremony was attended by military and government officials including Admiral Guadalupe Juan José Bernal Méndez, commander of the Fifth Naval Region; Commissioner General José Luis Martínez Rojas, commander of the 10th Military Police Brigade and Quintana Roo National Guard coordinator; Benito Juárez Municipal President Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña; and state education, legislative, and judicial representatives.
