Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The discovery of 16 bodies at the Sac Lol ranch in the municipality of Puerto Morelos underscores the severe crisis of the disappeared currently afflicting Quintana Roo, where the number of cases has already exceeded the 2024 total by 8 percent, with nearly two months remaining in the year.
According to reviews conducted by Sol Quintana Roo of the National Registry of Disappeared and Missing Persons, the state closed last year with 339 disappeared persons. During 2025, as of the 10th of this month, 367 missing persons are already registered.
This figure represents the most severe crisis of this phenomenon, which is linked to organized crime. The Sac Lol ranch, located in the town of Leona Vicario, is just one example of this phenomenon that is tearing at the fabric of Quintana Roo society. The statistics highlight that the municipalities where this occurs most frequently are Benito Juárez and Playa del Carmen.
In total, 997 people have been categorized with this status, of which 628 have been found. From that previous figure, 601 were located alive; however, regrettably, 27 were found dead, as is now the case at the Sac Lol ranch.
Currently, the state ranks first in the peninsula for this issue, above Campeche and Yucatán. In this context, Quintana Roo is the entity with the highest growth in this serious situation.
According to sources consulted by Sol Quintana Roo, the investigation file is being handled by the deputy attorney general's office in Playa del Carmen, where the proceedings are being conducted with total discretion due to the delicate nature of the case, which the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office could no longer conceal.
To date, no arrests have been announced in connection with these cases, in a municipality like Puerto Morelos where only seven disappeared persons have been reported. This leads to the supposition that the human remains found at Sac Lol were not from that municipality, but from other jurisdictions within the state.
